ImageThe Virginia Department of Education Standards of Learning (SOL) serve as a reference for teachers to implement the curriculum in each subject area.  Instructional goals are determined based on the intellectual abilities, learning styles, and aptitude levels of each student.  The Center’s program is success oriented — goals are realistic yet challenging based on the determined levels for each student.

The teaching staff at The LEAD Center, Ltd. are trained in the utilization of a coherent, thematic curriculum approach to teaching and individualize methods according to the ability and skill level of each student.  Using alternative assessments and standard state assessments, each student will have the opportunity to experience academic success.

The strength and success of The LEAD Center, Ltd. can be attributed to the considerate and respectful care offered by professional staff.  All teachers and counselors at The LEAD Center, Ltd. have been endorsed by the Virginia Department of Education.

New this year, The LEAD Center, Ltd. is tracking the curriculum and applying grading to a grouping of activity plans.  This tells us:

  • if the child was exposed to the curriculum.
  • whether the child passed the assessments.
  • And, it develops an inventory of SOL objectives the child has been exposed to and passed, telling Center staff what remediation efforts are needed.
This data system is pivotal in developing a better understanding of our students needs.  It decreases redundant efforts of going over materials already known.

Grading

The LEAD Center, Ltd. students are graded according to their academic ability level.  Some students are graded using traditional assessment methods (tests, projects, reports, etc.). Some students are assessed by state approved alternative assessment methods.  Determination of how the student is assessed takes place during enrollment and the results become part of the student’s Individual Education Program (IEP).

In some cases, state assessment tests are used to determine an appropriate level of instruction for the student.  Grades are determined based on the quality and the quantity of work submitted, as well as class participation, homework, projects, etc.
